Pipemax Feedback use at Engine Masters 2012 (Early Hemi)

Larry, I wanted to share some feedback on Pipemax! :D

A little prefix: I've been with Danny Miller's team since 2010 and after
his passing in early 2011 I took over the induction related duties to carry
on with the team for Elaine Miller (Danny's wife). I was responsible for
the initial idea of the unique Hilborn setup (Danny invited me to the team
at that time) that we have and helped design it behind the scenes with
Danny for the 2010 event. I finally got to do major revisions in 2011 to
the beautiful piece that you see today. This year I spent 3-4 months solely
working on our induction to refine everything that we have and make
everything as perfect as I could. Early in testing we had electrical
gremlins which basically ate up our first test session. The following test
session our electrical issues were gone and our tuners went to work trying
to find every ounce of power for the contest. The Street Class RPM range in
2012 was 2500-6500 and we found what the motor liked in that range. We ran
out of time in testing which near the top of my list was headers and
collector testing. We tried a few sets of headers but never got around to
collector length. In testing we were VERY strong with a particular
combination and we had confidence going to the event. Once I showed up to
see the motor for the first time this year (since we are all spread between
5 states) I noticed how short the collectors were and remembered that was
one area where we didn't get to test much. I knew we should end up going to
the finals and hoped somebody else wouldn't have something stronger to bump
us from 3rd place. After being on the bump spot with one day to go I
figured it would be smart to start planning as if we were headed to the
finals.

Our team gathered in the lobby of our hotel for a "meeting of the minds"
were a fellow team member had Pipemax on his laptop. My wife was able to
locate my notes for our build and she gave me the exhaust port centerline
number I had measured for our heads. With that number and having the
remaining engine specs burned into my head we ran the numbers in Pipemax
which told us we needed 17.4" of collector length. We were basically 9" shy
of that number so I made the decision that we needed to add a 9" to our
collector by making a bolt in spool piece for our setup. My fellow team
members were afraid that this change could make matters worse and only
being 2.5 points away we could probably find something in the tune to net
enough to overtake 2nd place. I felt that we needed to throw a touchdown
pass for the endzone and try to go for the win! I was confident that it
would be a substantial gain and convinced my fellow team members that it
was the right move - no pressure right LOL! The following day the students
fabricated the extensions for us and the remaining contestants didn't
manage to beat our score so we were headed to the finals only 2.5 points
from 2nd place!

Now I have used your program MANY times but more for induction related
things and not the exhaust. We were down alot of power from testing and it
was obvious the motor was choking by the graphs. I felt the change would be
a big one and would be worth 30-40 points in the finals. With that said
here are the results!

It ended up netting 35+ points and we locked in for Runner Up! Just wanted
to pass along a BIG THANKS to you and your product.
I wanted to post this up on your forum but wasn't sure where to really post
it. I enjoy your forum and plan to participate more once life settles down
a little bit.
I've always read your posts over at Speedtalk and enjoy learning from what
you do.
Take care for now!

Raw unedited video shot by Wes Hicks (mechanicals) and Nick Smithberg (airflow).
Watch the FINALS pulls as we make changes that bumped us from third to second place.
This engine is a 1956 Chrysler Hemi with a custom Hilborn/Smithberg EFI induction, tuned by me.

HUGE thanks to the members of my team that made this happen:
Bob Holmes, Bob Walker, Scott Courtney, Geoff Velguth, Patrick Pearson, Tony Wright,
Mitch Harris, Stacy Dalzell, Laurie Dalzell, Elaine Miller, Danny Miller,
Nick Smithberg, Wes Hicks, John Beck, Paul Bowman, Andrew Calkins,
and the rest of the staff at ProMachine / Vintage Hot Rods in Chico, CA!
